No more Catalog Update notifications

"Catalog update" notifications can be useful but polluate the blog with static information.

The only useful information is the most recent update time. As this is already visible in the http://www.soft2base.com home page, this blog notification removal is harmless.

Blog is back online

Rip Googlecl, now using basic mail for blog updates.
Sorry, no more tags and HTML formating for the moment. At least it works !

NEW: Mozilla Firefox ESR 31.5.0 is now in the Catalog

Mozilla has released Firefox ESR v31.5.0

Numerous administrators were asking for this Extended Support channel.

For personal use, we still recommend the usual Firefox, currently at 36.0.1

The Soft2base catalog and exe are unavailable for a short moment.

We are changing of files provider for better peformance.

TrueCrypt project is oddly dead

In the sad news list, there is the end of the excellent TrueCrypt which now sounds to be NSA-compliant in its 7.2 version...

Time to find another GOOD encryption tool, certainly NOT M$-BitLocker as suggested.
Version 7.1a remains in Soft2base catalog until I have more information.

[edit]
FreeOTFE decrypts disk created under Ubuntu.
May be the right time to include it in Soft2base. Not tonight, too late ;)

[edit2]
nice reading here:

Catalog's version checker is back to normal

You may have noticed that several applications in the Soft2base Catalog were out of date during the last month.

After an upgrade of the test machine, the "new version" checker was working at 60%, therefore some important upgrades were forgotten.

This has been fixed and almost all applications are now up to date.

10 000 views :)

The 10000th view has been reached today, very happy to see that.

OK some blogs are doing this hourly, I admit ;)

Opera 16 is out but ... still "wait & see"

Opera has released the version 16.0 but the CONs are still well over the PROs since the change to the new rendering engine based on Chrome

As a consequence, Soft2base remains with version 12 until Opera fixes this.

Long term, Opera may be removed from the catalog due to this lake of quality...

Aug 22, 2013

Opera 15 is out but ... wait and see

Opera has released the version 15.0 with a new rendering engine (the same as Chrome)
As a consequence:
  • Users are reporting many issues and changes in features
  • It is available only in x32. Chromium x64 for windows won't be available mid-term :(
Therefore, Soft2base will remain with version 12 until Opera stabilizes this v15.

Piriform Defraggler 2.14 is finally visible on the web page

The Defraggler download page is finally showing the v2.14

The release date is April 23rd, so this 2.14 may not be the same as the one seen some days ago :(

Outdated version on some application homepages

This is a very odd situation: for 2 major applications, their web site is not reporting the correct version !

Case 1: Mozilla Firefox 20.0.1 is proposed as upgrade when starting Firefox, whereas the Firefox homepage is still refering to 20.0

Case 2: Pifiform Defraggler 2.14 has been announced then disappeared, back to 2.13

This situation has already been detected by Soft2base scanners when Miscrosoft Silverlight 5.1 was released: the homepage was still refereing 5.0 from time to time. This disappeared after some months (!)

This is probably due to outdated pages on external web cache like Akamai.

The important point is that the files for the latest versions are available for download :)

(NEW) Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Redistribuable

The application Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Reditribuable,  version 10.0.30319 has been added in the Soft2base Catalog.

(NEW) Adobe Shockwave Player

Its installation includes the Firefox plugin.

(NEW) SoftKey Revealer 2.6.3

This nice utility displays licence keys of installed programs.

This is extremely useful when migrating an old PC to a new one

Softkey Revealer is at version 2.6.3

myDefrag website is back online

The site http://www.mydefrag.com/ is back online.

Therefore the download of myDefrag is now possible.

Reminder: In most cases, Soft2base does not host setup executables but download them directly from the editor web site. This is why some files may be unavailable from time to time.

Apr 8, 2013

myDefrag not available for download (site down)

The site http://www.mydefrag.com/ is currently down.

Therefore the download of myDefrag is not possible for the moment.

If you have an up-to-date copy of setup_mydefrag on your offline USB item, you can still install.

EDIT: back on line (April 13th, 2013)

LibreOffice 3.6 and 4 in Soft2base catalog

LibreOffice 4.0.1 is now available in Soft2base catalog.

This is a major release with a lot of changes. This is why even the LibreOffice foundation is recommanding to use the v3.6.x branch for production usage.

Therefore, Soft2base will propose the 2 versions together for a while, like for java 6 and 7.

Codenames:
  • libreoffice3 => 3.6.5
  • libreoffice => 4.0.1

Feb 20, 2013

what a day

Today, we had new releases for Java 6, Java 7, iTunes, Firefox, Thunderbird and even Microsoft Security Essentials !

CPU-Z 1.63 is also out but it embeds junk software so we will release it only when a solution to avoid the bars is found. Soft2base is still providing v1.62

LibreOffice 4.0 is available but that a big change and it is recommended to stay with 3.6.x for the moment. The plugin API has changed and some major plugins are not yet available in 4.0
